James Thurston 'Jim' Nabors was born on June 12, 1930, in Sylacauga, Alabama.

After his U.N. stint, he went to Chattanooga, Tennessee, to begin a showbiz career.
He later joined the NBC network in Los Angeles, where he worked as a film cutter.
He also had a job at The Horn, a Santa Monica restaurant, and played in Cabaret Theater.
Andy Griffith noticed him while he was working at The Horn, and he was cast as Gomer Pyle in the 13th episode "The Andy Griffith Show" during its third season.
Despite being cast in only one episode, Jim went on to become a regular due to the popularity of his character. He later began playing in the show's spin-off "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C."
He was a member of the main cast for five years before deciding to do something else.
He began his singing career on February 24, 1964, when he sang on "The Andy Griffith Show," which led to a singing performaqnce on "The Danny Kaye Show" on April 8, 1964.
He sang in various shows over the next few years, culminating with his singing the national anthem before the first game of the 1973 Baseball World Series in Oakland.
