Career And Personal Life

Career

Following his return to England, Sellers had a BBC audition and made an appearance on the television program "New To You" in 1948.

Later, he contacted BBC radio producer Roy Speer and introduced himself to him by posing as "Much Binding in the Marsh" actor Kenneth Horne.

Peter's performance impressed Speer, who allowed him to participate on "Show Time," and Sellers quickly established himself as a regular radio performer.

Peter provided the voices for a number of characters on "The Goon Program," which has been called "perhaps the most influential comedy show of all time," from 1951 until 1960.

In the movies "Penny Points to Paradise" from 1951 and "Down Among the Z Men" from 1952, The Goons made an appearance.

Orders Are Orders (1954), The Ladykillers (1955), The Smallest Show on Earth (1957), The Naked Truth (1957), and The Mouse That Roared (1959) are among the movies in which Sellers had an appearance.

For the 1959 picture "I'm All Right Jack," he received a BAFTA Award. He and Sophia Loren co-starred in the 1960 film "The Millionairess," and they also co-wrote the songs "Goodness Gracious Me" and "Bangers and Mash" on the album "Peter & Sophia."

Personal Life

On September 15, 1951, Peter wed actress Anne Howe (better known as Anne Hayes), and the couple had two children together: Michael was born in 1954 and Sarah was born in 1958 before being divorced in 1963.

Ten days after first meeting Britt Ekland, Sellers married the actress on February 19, 1964, and the couple welcomed Victoria in 1965.

In order to have "the ultimate orgasm" in April 1964, Peter swallowed amyl nitrites. As a result, he had eight heart attacks over the course of three hours.

He married the model Miranda Quarry on August 24, 1970, after the divorce of Sellers and Ekland in 1968. Four years later, they separated.

The next year, on February 18, 1977, Peter wed actress Lynne Frederick; although though their marriage seemed to have suffered at the end of Sellers' life, they were still together when he passed away.

After suffering a serious heart attack in March 1977, Peter had pacemaker surgery, and in April 1980, he passed away in Dublin as a consequence of his cardiac issues.

On July 22, 1980, just before he was supposed to attend a dinner reunion with his old "Goon Show" co-stars Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe, Sellers passed out in a London hotel room.

On July 24th, Peter, 54, passed away after a heart attack in Middlesex Hospital in London.

Real Estate

At the time of his passing, Sellers apparently started the process of omitting Lynne Frederick from his will, but she ultimately ended up getting almost the whole estate, which was valued at between £4.5 million and £5 million.

Each of Peter's children got just £800. Spike Milligan begged Frederick to raise the sum, but he refused. Exact 26 years after Peter, Sellers' son Michael too died of a heart attack.

After Sellers passed away, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer made an effort to continue the "Pink Panther" movies by giving Dudley Moore the part.

The company went to filmmaker Blake Edwards when Moore declined the position, but he refused to recast the character.

"Trail of the Pink Panther," a collection of omitted sequences from "Return of the Pink Panther," "The Pink Panther Strikes Again," and "Revenge of the Pink Panther," was published by him in 1982.

Frederick filed a lawsuit as a result, arguing that the movie was a violation of contract, and she was given $1 million in addition to 1.36 percent of the total sales and 3.15 percent of the profits from the movie.

1994 saw Lynne Frederick pass away. The assets and rights to his inheritance were then acquired by her daughter Cassie Unger, who was born four years AFTER seller passed away.

Car Collection

The most coveted automotive collection of the 1960s belonged to Peter Sellers. Spike Milligan, a fellow Goon Show comedian, referred to the Pink Panther actor's incessant need to upgrade his motors as "metal underwear" because of how often he did so.

Austin Heavy Twelve Open Road Tourer (1930)

Richard Henry Sellers made his theatrical debut at the age of two weeks. He was born in Portsmouth in 1925, above what is now a Chinese takeout.

His parents performed in vaudeville and traveled to regional theaters. Teenage Sellers enlisted in the RAF during the war, where he amused the soldiers before receiving widespread praise for his performances with The Goon Show on BBC radio in the 1950s.

Jaguar XK140 (1955)

A Jaguar XK140, which was and is still a Hollywood favorite with current owners like Harrison Ford, replaced Jowett Javelins, MG Magnettes, and Rover P4s.

The XK120's replacement, this swooping roadster had a 210 horsepower straight-six engine, a 121 mph peak speed, stronger brakes, rack and pinion steering, and superior suspension.

Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud (1956)

Peter had a number of Silver Clouds, beginning with one that belonged to one of his idols, Cary Grant, from 1956.

A few years later, when Sellers decided to sell it, he listed it under the title "Titled Car Wishes To Dispose Of Owner" in The Times' ads.

Sellers sometimes accepted inducements from producers in the form of four-wheel vehicles, much as Elizabeth Taylor insisted on receiving presents from Tiffany's before she would leave her trailer.

He earned a Silver Cloud III in addition to his $1 million pay for the 1967 James Bond parody Casino Royale.

Bentley S1 Continental (1959)

The transition from black and white to Technicolor in Sellers' life was a sign of the decade that was to come.

He had lost weight, dressed stylishly, and was often seen at the fanciest gatherings with the jet-set elite.

He saw his stunning Mulliner-bodied two-door Bentley as both a fantastic grand tourer and the key to a greater social standing.

Aston Martin DB4 GT (1961)

The actor bought a stunning Aston Martin DB4 GT in green before his meetings with crank clairvoyant Maurice Woodruff, who gave Peter a superstitious aversion to the colors green and purple.

Ferrari 250 GTE (1962)

On the production of the 1960 film The Millionairess, Peter fell head over heels for his married co-star Sophia Loren, despite the fact that Sellers was already married and Ms. Loren had shown no interest in him romantically.

Austin Mini ‘Hooper Cooper’ (1963)

Peter was very proud of both his Mini Coopers and his formidable status insignia. Along with Ringo Starr and his Mini that could accommodate a drum set (the two co-starred in 1969's The Magic Christian), he had essentially started the cult of customized Minis.

Peter chose to splurge and paid Hooper an eyebrow-raising £2,600, which was four times the price of the basic vehicle in 1963, to create the most luxurious Mini to ever roll off the assembly line.

Aston Martin DB5 Convertible (1964)

Speaking of the Royal Family, as part of the actor's calculated efforts at social rising, Sellers sold Lord Snowdon his stunningly gorgeous 1964 Caribbean pearl Aston Martin DB5 Convertible at a loss.

Buick Riviera (1964)

As soon as Richard Williams completed his apprenticeship at Newport Pagnell, Peter hired him to take care of the Sellers collection. Richard eventually created the Aston Martin workshop RS Williams.

Ferrari 500 Superfast (1965)

These expensive items often included jokes. One occasion, Sellers motioned for Spike Milligan to enter his Ferrari 500 Superfast's boot to investigate the source of a strange squeak.

Ferrari 275 GTB/4 (1967)

By the end of the 1960s, Peter was mostly residing in Switzerland and driving a Celeste blue Ferrari 275 GTB/4 on a regular basis.

He bought it used in 1969 from a guy in Lausanne and maintained it for the most of the 1970s despite greatly streamlining his collection.
