Grammy-winning entertainer and former judge on “American Idol” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” Paula Abdul sues 'American Idol' executive producer of sexual assaultalong with gender violence and negligence against Nigel Lythgoe, according to a lawsuit filed Friday.
The singer-choreographer was a judge on the singing competition show from its first season in 2002 until 2009. On December 29, she sent the papers to a court in Los Angeles under the Sexual Abuse and Cover-Up Accountability Act. This law lets most civil suits in sexual assault cases go forward after the statute of limitations has passed, and the deadline for filing is December 31.

In a lawsuit filed Friday, Paula Abdul said that Nigel Lythgoe, an executive producer for "American Idol" and "So You Think You Can Dance," sexually assaulted her.
According to a lawsuitfiled in the Los Angeles County Superior Court under the Sexual Abuse and Cover-Up Accountability Act, the Grammy-winning singer said she was raped twice, once in the early 2000s and again around 2015 while she was a judge on TV competition shows. This is because the statute of limitations for sexual assault lawsuits has passed.
During one of `American Idol's' initial seasons, while on the road for the show's regional auditions, Lythgoe sexually assaulted Abdul. One evening, following the day's auditions, Lythgoe and Abdul entered the elevator of the hotel where they were staying. Upon entering the elevator, Lythgoe shoved Abdul against the wall, then grabbed her genitals and breasts and began shoving his tongue down her throat.- Paula Abdul lawsuit
Abdul attempted to push Lythgoe away from her and let him know that his behavior was not acceptable. When the doors to the elevator for her floor opened, Abdul ran out of the elevator to her hotel room.- Paula Abdul lawsuit
In tears, Abdul quickly called one of her representatives to inform them of the assault, but ultimately decided not to take action for fear that Lythgoe would have her fired from American Idol.- Paula Abdul lawsuit
The second claimed sexual assault happened a long time after Abdul was on American Idol. Abdul agreed to be a judge on So You Think You Can Dance in 2015. Soon after, Lythgoe asked Abdul to dinner, where he reportedly assaulted her again. In the complaint, Abdul's lawyers said,
As with the earlier incident, Abdul feared she would be retaliated against or blackballed if she spoke out about the incident.- Paula Abdul lawsuit
In a statement released on Saturday, Lythgoe rejected the claims.
To say that I am shocked and saddened by the allegations made against me by Paula Abdul is a wild understatement. For more than two decades, Paula and I have interacted as dear – and entirely platonic – friends and colleagues.- Paula Abdul lawsuit
Yesterday, however, out of the blue, I learned of these claims in the press and I want to be clear: not only are they false, they are deeply offensive to me and to everything I stand for. While Paula’s history of erratic behavior is well known, I can’t pretend to understand exactly why she would file a lawsuit that she must know is untrue. But I can promise that I will fight this appalling smear with everything I have,”- Paula Abdul lawsuit
