MrBeast helped 1000 people who were blind see again. This was a great way for him to show his kind side, and many people loved the act. Because of this, MrBeast faced criticismon his latest YouTube video.
MrBeast passed PewDiePie in November of last year to become the YouTuber with the most subscribers in the world, with 131 million. On January 28, he posted a video on his channel that said, “In this video, we are curing the blindness of 1,000 people.”
But some online commentators have said that the creator, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, was wrong to do this.
The most popular YouTuber in the world has responded to criticism after a video showed him paying for several life-changing surgeries. In the post, MrBeast says that he paid for cataract surgery for a thousand people so that they could see again.
But the video, which has been watched more than 71 million times, has gotten mixed reviews. Some people have called it "charity porn." Jimmy Donaldson, who is 24 years old, tweeted that the average MrBeast video lost $1,500,000 last year in response to claims that the video was made only to make money.
It's not surprising that MrBeast's new video, "1,000 Blind People See For The First Time," went viral so quickly, with 65 million views as of this writing, just 3 days after it was uploaded to the platform.
MrBeast says in a voiceover at the beginning of the video that 200 million people around the world see everything as if a cloud were always in front of their eyes.
A surgeon he talks to tells him that ten-minute surgery could cure half of the blindness in the world, which makes some people understandably angry.
On Twitter, a tweet that said the video had "something so demonic" about it went viral, and a reply said that people weren't mad at MrBeast, but that he shouldn't be able to do this in the first place.
Hasan "Hasanabi" Piker, who is known for being the biggest political streamer on Twitch, said something similar while Valkyrae and watched the video live. He said that it made him furious that the US blocks access to a 10-minute procedure just because it is behind a paywall.
Valkyrae was shocked at first and asked Piker what was wrong with him. Once the controversial streamer explained, Valkyrae agreed. MrBeast, who now has 131 million subscribers and is the most popular YouTuber in the world, said at first that he didn't think so many people would watch the video.
As more people watched the video, there were questions and worries about how expensive eye surgery is in some parts of the world and how hard it is to get. Some people also said that wealthy people shouldn't be used to trying to solve bigger problems in society and healthcare.
But not everyone agrees, and some people thank him for bringing attention to the issue. Andrew Hodgson, president of the National Federation of the Blind of the UK, told BBC Newsbeat:
Anything that puts a spotlight on such treatable eye conditions like cataracts and provides funding for people to undergo surgery to restore their sight should be welcomed. Why would anybody criticise this work and raising awareness of it through film and social media channels?- Andrew Hodgson
A spokeswoman for the International Charity Sightsavers said they were:
Encouraged to see the subject of the global eye health burden being raised to a large public audience. Eye health is often a forgotten topic when it comes to global health conversations, but eye health equals opportunity, allowing children to learn and adults to earn.- International Charity Sightsavers
But later that day, MrBeast sent out another tweet in which he was angry that some people on Twitter didn't appreciate what he was doing. This caused a whole new round of anger.
Some people have pointed to this as proof that MrBeast doesn't help people out of the goodness of his heart, but because it's a good business move that brings him fame and money.
MrBeast, a popular YouTuber, recently changed the lives of 1,000 people by curing their blindness. This didn't just happen by chance. MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, and is 24 years old, has made an entire YouTube channel out of videos of elaborate acts of kindness.
Many of his fans liked that he uses his fame for good and always finds ways to help people who need it. But, as is always the case, the Internet also got a lot of bad press
Instead of recognizing the good that MrBeast does, many people pointed out that the way he does charity by filming it for views makes it look like a show. Some people also said that YouTube makes them want to be kind, so he keeps more for themselves.
