Human remains found on Mt. Baldy days after Julian Sands’ search resumed
Authorities say that hikers found human remains in a mountain area in southern California where British star Julian Sands went missing five months ago. The body was found around 10 a.m. on Saturday in the woods near Mount Baldy in the San Gabriel mountains. It was taken to the coroner's office to be identified next week, according to a statement from the San Bernardino county sheriff's office.
Hikers called the Fontana sheriff's station when they found human bones about 40 miles (65 km) from the 65-year-old actor's home in Los Angeles's North Hollywood neighborhood. More information was not available right away.
Sands, who is 65 years old, went climbing near the Mount Baldy Bowl area of the San Gabriel Mountains outside of Los Angeles on January 13. That same day, his family reported him missing. The bodies were found more than a week after the search for Sands was restarted with teams on the ground, drones, and helicopters.
Since January, the Sheriff’s Department has conducted eight searches (ground and air) specific to Mr. Sands, with volunteer searcher hours exceeding 500 hours. Additionally, eight unrelated search and rescue operations have been conducted in the Mount Baldy area.- The Sheriff of San Bernardino County
When Sands went missing in January, officials said that it was hard to find him because he was in a remote area. Search and rescue teams on the ground, which are usually made up of amateurs, were taken off the mountain in January because the trails were dangerous and an avalanche could happen.

Mt. Baldy is thought to be one of California's most dangerous hills to climb. Six people have died, and crews have done more than 100 searches. This is because thrill-seekers and experienced hikers are attracted to the task of the more than 16,000-meter mountain.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office said today that hikers had found a body in the woods near Mount Baldy. This is the same area where actor Julian Sands went missing in January. The news release doesn't say who the actor is, but it does say, "Identification should be completed next week at which time we will update this press release."
Due to the harsh winter conditions in the Western U.S. this spring, the search for Sands had to be put on hold for a while. Sheriffs in San Bernardino have said that they have done eight searches and eight other operations to try to find the British actor, who is a skilled outdoorsman.
The work got back on track last Saturday. Officials said that more than 80 search and rescue workers, deputies, and staff took part in the search on Saturday in the nearby wilderness and remote areas across the mountain. Two helicopters and drone crews were part of the attempt.
