According to a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times, and the U.K. newsshow Channel 4 Dispatches, Russell Brand has been accused by five women, including a 16-year-old, of rape, sexual assault, and physical and mental abuse. Four of the women stayed anonymous.
In an article published by The Times on Saturday and during an episode of Dispatches on Saturday evening local time, the media said that the alleged incidents happened between 2006 and 2013, when the comedian, who is 48 years old, worked as a host for BBC Radio 2 and Channel 4 and as an actor in Hollywood movies.
The first woman told the media that Brand raped her while she was up against a wall in Los Angeles. The same day, she went to a rape crisis center for help. During the investigation, text messages between the woman and Brand were also found. She sent him a reply that said, “When a girl say[s] NO it means no.”The star supposedly told them that he was "very sorry."
Another woman said that the comic attacked her when he was 31 and she was 16. She said that he called her "the child" during their three-month relationship, which was mentally abusive and he was in charge of her. She said that he "forced his penis down her throat"and made her choke and that he only stopped when she punched him in the gut.
A third woman told the news organizations that Brand sexually attacked her while she worked for him in L.A., and that he threatened to sue her if she told anyone about it. The fourth woman also said that the actor sexually attacked her and hurt her physically and mentally.
In 2006, pop star Dannii Minogue also called him a "vile predator"in an interview that has since emerged. His ex-wife Katy Perry said that he was "very controlling"in an interview.
The Metropolitan Police have said that they are aware of "media reports of a series of sexual assault allegations," but they have not received any reports about this.
Some of the accusations are that team members on his Big Brother spin-off were made to feel like they were working as a "pimp" by approaching young women on his behalf and that he raped a woman at his Los Angeles home. As the accusations came out on Saturday, Brand was giving a sold-out show in London. He told the crowd that they would "appreciate" that he couldn't talk about certain things.
Before the stories came out, Brand shared a videoonline in which he denied the claims, which had been made in two "extremely disturbing letters"from a "mainstream media" TV company and a newspaper. He didn't say the names of the news companies.
Amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute. These allegations pertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the movies and, as I have written about extensively in my books, I was very, very promiscuous.- Russell Brand
Now during that time of promiscuity the relationships I had were absolutely, always consensual. I was always transparent about that then, almost too transparent, and I am being transparent about it now as well.- Russell Brand
