GUILLERMO DEL TORO’S CABINET OF CURIOSITIES | First Look | Netflix
The series was announced for the first time in 2018, and it would consist of eight episodes written and directed by directors that del Toro has personally selected.
“„In this anthology we gave ownership of each episode to the directors," he says in the first-look teaser. Each of the episodes has a whole world. They present you with different delights. Some are savory, some are sweet. You get a surprise from each of the bites.
On the list of directors is Jennifer Kent, who was responsible for the wonderful film The Babadook in 2014.
Kent's episode, titled "The Murmuring," is based on an original story written by del Toro and stars Essie Davis, who played the lead role in The Babadook (aka Miss Fisher).
Catherine Hardwicke is the director of the film "Dreams in the Witch House," which is adapted from a short story written by H.P. Lovecraft (Lords of Dogtown, Twilight).
Vincenzo Natali (In the Tall Grass, Splice) is in charge of the direction of "Graveyard Rats," while Guillermo Navarro (Narcos) is in charge of directing "Lot 36," which is also based on an original narrative written by del Toro.
The episode "Pickman's Model," which was also based on a Lovecraft short story, was directed by Keith Thomas (Firestarter).
"The Autopsy," "The Viewing," and "The Outside" were directed by David Prior (The Empty Man), Panos Cosmatos (Mandy), and Ana Lily Amirpour (who directed the exquisite "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night"), respectively.
A star-studded cast, which includes Rupert Grint, Ben Barnes, Crispin Glover, Peter Weller, Kate Micucci, Nia Vardalos, David Hewlett, Demetrius Grosse, Sebastian Roche, F. Murray Abraham, Hannah Galway, Steve Agee, and Michael Therriault, adds to the diverse range of voices and artistic styles featured in the film.
The fact that the series also includes the breathtakingly atmospheric visual effects for which del Toro is famed is the icing on the cake.
“„In the teaser, Guillermo del Toro can be heard saying, "We wanted to create beautiful, practical creatures with all the artistry that goes into creating a great monster," del Toro says in the teaser. "We achieved some of the most remarkable images in the series. With Cabinet of Curiosities, what I'm trying to say is 'Look, the world is beautiful and horrible at exactly the same time."
