"Oppenheimer" emerged victorious at the BAFTA Awards 2024, held at the Royal Festival Hall in London, England, on Sunday. This year, the award season favorite directed by Christopher Nolan received thirteen nominations and won seven, including the prestigious Best Film award, Lead Actor, and Director honors.
In his acceptance speech after receiving his very first BAFTA, Nolan thanked the studio Universal for "allowing us to tackle something dark and seeing the potential in that." With five victories, "Poor Things" was the other notable recipient of the ceremony, which Emma Stone won for lead actress. Throughout this award season iteration, "The Holdovers" actress Da'Vine Joy Randolph maintains her dominance in the supporting actress category.
Randolph expressed gratitude to her co-star Paul Giamatti while accepting her BAFTA, remarking, "My God, I cry every time I utter your name. You exemplify the epitome of excellence and excellence in our field." Jonathan Glazer's eerie Holocaust drama "The Zone of Interest" was awarded both the prestigious award for Best Film Not in the English Language and for Most Distinguished British Film.
In contrast, the "Barbie" film, "Saltburn," "Maestro," and the "Killers of the Flower Moon," an epic directed by Martin Scorsese, were all unsuccessful on Sunday. Michael J. Fox, who presented the best film category, and Tom Cruise (via video link) were among the film industry luminaries who attended the ceremony.
In the wake of the cancer diagnosis of his father, King Charles, and the hospitalization of Catherine, Princess of Wales, Prince William also attended the ceremony in the course of his public duty.
The Screen ActorsGuild Awards (which will be streamed on Netflix on February 24) are the only other significant awards ceremony preceding the Oscars on March 10, following the BAFTAs. The BAFTA ceremony was not broadcast in its entirety live. It was initially aired on BBC One in the United Kingdom and is presently streamable via BBC iPlayer and BritBox.

Final Thoughts

As predicted by critics, the BAFTA Awards 2024 have validated that "Oppenheimer" is the film to surpass at the Oscars this year. Christopher Nolan's opus won the award for best film and director at the Royal Festival Hall in London this evening, which hosted the ceremony for the second year. Even though a considerable number of the outcomes were accurately predicted, not everything transpired as intended.
