After 20 years in the movie business, Priyanka Chopra Jonas says she is finally making as much as her male co-stars. In an interview with the BBC, the actress and activist said that in all the years she worked in Bollywood, she never had "pay parity."
Chopra Jonas was one of the women on a list of 100 inspiring and powerful women from around the world that was released Tuesday by a UK broadcaster. The BBC put a short video clip from an in-depth interview with the Indian star on its website. The full interview will air next year. Chopra Jonas said in the clip,
I’ve never had pay parity in Bollywood. I’ve done 60-something movies, I think, but I’ve never got paid the same amount as my male co-actor. I would get paid about 10% of my male co-actor.- Priyanka Chopra Jonas
Along with the video clip, the BBC's website also had an article with parts of the interview. In this interview, the actress and former Miss World said that she just got equal pay for the first time for her role in the upcoming sci-fi spy show "Citadel," which will be shown on Amazon Prime Video. Comparing the situation in Hollywood to that in Bollywood, she said:
Well, the first time it’s happened to me, it has happened in Hollywood. So I don’t know, going forward. Because this was my first show with a male actor as a co-lead.- Priyanka Chopra Jonas
Chopra Jonas is a regular in Hollywood now. From 2015 to 2018, she played an FBI agent on ABC's "Quantico." Richard Madden, who used to be on "Game of Thrones," is also in "Citadel," but she didn't say that in the interview.
After winning the Miss World contest two years earlier, the actress made her first Bollywood movie in 2002. In the written interview with the BBC, she talked about how the way men were treated on set was different.
I thought it was absolutely OK to sit for hours and hours on set, while my male co-actor just took his own time, and decided whenever he wanted to show up on set is when we would shoot.- Priyanka Chopra Jonas
She also talked about being called names like "black cat" and "dusky" because of her body in the entertainment business. She said this in the video clip.
I did think that I was dark-skinned. I did think that I was not pretty enough. I did think that I would have to work a lot harder even though I thought I was probably a little bit more talented than my co-actorswho were lighter-skinned. I thought that was right.- Priyanka Chopra Jonas
I thought that because it was so normalized, so, I think, as I grew up, I saw things in my career that I didn’t even know were right or wrong and I had to be educated and learn along the way.- Priyanka Chopra Jonas
After three seasons, co-host Matt Lucas will leave "The Great British Bake Off." Chopra Jonas is an actress who has worked all over the world. She also has her own production company and is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador who fights for children's rights and girls' education. She talked to the camera about how fame can be both good and bad.
I count myself as the lucky one, part of the lucky few that are able to stand up for themselves. I faced racism, people called me names, or you know, said mean things to me, but people around the world get killed for it.- Priyanka Chopra Jonas
She said that being in the public eye comes with a certain amount of responsibility.
I’m not a politician, I’m an entertainer and I can’t change laws, I can’t create laws, but I have influence. All I think about is what am I doing every single day, can I be a good person and make sure that I create actions within my own life that maybe have a butterfly effect.- Priyanka Chopra Jonas
