Midway through the 1960s, Donald's acting career slowly got underway with little parts in British television shows.

In 1967, Sutherland had his big break. He was chosen to star in the renowned action movie "The Dirty Dozen."

After Donald joined a star-studded ensemble that featured Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson, the film became a financial success.

As a consequence of his achievement, Sutherland relocated from London to the United States to seek a profession.

In the 2000s, he appeared as a leading actor in movies including "Cold Mountain," "The Italian Job," "Commander in Chief," "Pride & Prejudice," and "Fool' Gold."

2012 saw Sutherland make his acting debut as President Snow in the first film of the "Hunger Games" trilogy.

John Landis, the director and producer of Animal House, knew Donald's family. Universal, the movie's production company, urged that Landis cast a well-known actor in the role.

The studio gave Landis permission to pay Sutherland $35,000 in addition to 2.5 percent of the film's earnings.

Sutherland graciously rejected, believing that this film had little possibility of ever earning a single dime.

Then, Universal increased the offer to $35,000 plus 15% of the movie's gross receipts (gross receipts, not net receipts).

In other words, 15% of the film's gross box office receipts, before any expenses were deducted. Sutherland once again graciously rejected.

If Donald was going to take the job, he insisted on being paid in cash up front. At the conclusion of the talks, Universal and Donald agreed to a $50,000 upfront payment with zero gross points.

He spent two days working on the film. A total of $141 million was made from the box office and home video sales of Animal House.

Sutherland made a terrible financial choice, as you may have imagined. Even without accounting for inflation, he would have made $20 million if he had simply agreed to take a 15 percent ownership.

Keep in mind that $20,000,000 in 1972 is comparable to around $122,000,000 in today's currency.
