Only a few women have been able to distinguish themselves from the herd and achieve true glory in the female side of bodybuilding. Cory Everson, on the other hand, was able to raise the standard during the sport's golden era and has remained at the top for decades.

Who Is Cory Everson?

Corinna "Cory" Everson (née Kneuer; born January 4, 1958) is an American actress and former female bodybuilder. From 1984 to 1989, Everson won the Ms. Olympia tournament six times in a row.

When Everson was younger, she was very active and involved in athletics. She went to Deerfield High School in Illinois, where she was a standout athlete and was named to the All-State team. She attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison after high school and was a multi-sport champion in gymnastics, track & field, and badminton. Additionally, Everson holds degrees in art and interior design.

“I never would have gone to the gym if I wasn’t in sports”

Everson met her future husband, Jeff Everson, at the university, who was a professional bodybuilder and strength instructor. He introduced her to the sport, and it wasn't long before she took competitive bodybuilding seriously. Although Everson began exercising mostly as a way for her and Jeff to spend time together. She had no idea she would become a famous figure in women's bodybuilding in the years to come.

“I never sat down and thought to myself, I want to be Ms. Olympia someday”

Competition And Professional Development

Cory Everson won her first competition, Ms. Mid America, in 1980, followed by a third-place finish at the American Couples competition with Jeff Efferson the following year, despite the fact that they won the same competition the next year in 1981. She went on to win more significant competitions over the next few years, earning her Pro Card in 1984 after taking first place at the NPC Nationals, which qualified her for the Olympia.

From 1984 until 1989, Cory was the reigning Ms. Olympia, having won the competition six years in a row.

After that, she competed in the 1984 Ms. Olympia competition, where she not only won the competition in her first appearance, but she also successfully defended her title for the next five years, finishing her career as an undefeated winner in 1989.

“The first one was 1984 and I honest to God did not expect to get in the top ten,” Everson said about her first Olympia win.

Cory Everson's last appearance at Ms. Olympia would also be her final professional bodybuilding competition. She competed in the 1989 Ms. Olympia and won, albeit it was a much tighter call this time, with Sandy Riddell nearly dethroning her. She did, however, decide to call it quits after this, citing her dissatisfaction with how close and competitive that particular event was.

Cory noted that the sport was shifting toward a greater emphasis on mass and muscle growth, an area in which she was having difficulty keeping up. Nonetheless, she retired on top, never losing the Ms. Olympia title. Until that point, it had never been done before, and it hasn't been done since.

Everson announced her retirement from bodybuilding because she said it was becoming increasingly difficult for her to win since the competition was becoming increasingly tougher and she could not keep up despite training really hard.

Blood Clot Problems

In 1981, while preparing for a competition, Everson worked as an interior designer in Chicago, Illinois. However, she began to have pain in her groin area that became increasingly severe, and she was sent to the hospital for a blood clot that nearly resulted in her leg being amputated. She spent ten weeks in intensive care and four weeks in critical care and had to relearn how to walk. She lost all of her muscles while she was hospitalized, but eventually returned to excel in her chosen vocation.

Throughout her career, Everson trained at a variety of gyms, including Ernie's Gym, Steve Davis' Gym, and Northridge Gold's, to mention a few.

Everson has an exceptionally outstanding physique (as seen by her Ms. Olympia titles), and the fact that she had been a prominent athlete only a few years earlier undoubtedly contributed to her overall development and maturity of muscular mass. Diet And Nutrition

Everson wasn't known for having the perfect diet, and she wasn't as rigid as some people would have you believe she was. She would allow herself to indulge in meals that she enjoyed, such as bagels, sandwiches, pizza, ice cream, and Snickers candy bars, which she particularly adored. However, the fact that she was able to consume those items was due to the fact that she had worked so hard in the gym. The fact that she gained muscle and maintained her figure indicates that she consumed adequate nutrients. Everson now consumes a very healthy diet. She consumes hardly little meat or sugar.

Life After Bodybuilding

Cory Everson switched from bodybuilding to acting upon her retirement. Her breakthrough performance occurred in 1991's Double Impact, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. She would go on to act in a variety of roles of various prominence, including roles in Natural Born Killers and Lois and Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman, as well as television adaptations of Hercules and Tarzan.

Everson did some magazine work in addition to her acting career. She also chose to put her pen skills to the test, publishing many books on fitness and diet. She also appeared in instructional exercise DVDs and bodybuilding films.

Everson was among the first to be inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame in 1999. She was also inducted into the Muscle Beach Venice Bodybuilding Hall of Fame six years later, in 2005. Her achievements continued, as she became the first woman to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Arnold Classic in 2007, and she was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 2008.

Cory has spent the latter part of her life avoiding the limelight and focusing on her role as a self-proclaimed soccer parent. She adopted two children with her second husband and maintains an active role in their lives. She has largely abandoned hard weight training at this point, opting instead for cardio roughly twice or three times a week.

Acting resume:

  • The Morning After (1986)
  • Double Impact (1991)
  • The Adventures of Brisco County. Jr (1996)

She also hosted and produced the fitness series Bodyshaping (an ESPN show, of which she has been the host for seven years), and she was the host and producer for Cory Everson's Gotta Sweat (an exercise TV show), of which she has been the host for seven years.

Personal Life And Health

Cory Everson divorced her fourteen-year marriage, Jeff Everson, in 1996, but retained the surname. After marrying Dr. Steve Donia, a cosmetic dentist, in 1998, she and her husband adopted two children from Russia. Everson is also fascinated by art.

Bev Francis, Gary Strydom, and other legends from her competition days are good friends of hers.

What Happened To Jeff Everson?

Jeff Everson, the bodybuilding star, died at the age of 68 after apparently complaining of leg and foot problems.

According to TMZ, the professional weightlifter and founder of Planet Muscle magazine were found dead on Monday (Feb. 25, 2019) at his Los Angeles home by his roommate and ex-fiancee.

Authorities believe he may have died of natural causes days earlier, given there were no traces of foul play and he did not appear to have committed himself.

According to TMZ, family members informed them that Jeff had recently complained of leg and foot pain.

However, he downplayed the soreness, believing it was the product of years of powerlifting.

Jeff had previously been candid about his steroid use - but he is not believed to have done so in a number of years.

Hogan trained him while he was a Mr. USA and Mr. America titleholder.

Corinna Everson-Donia, one of the finest female bodybuilders of all time, was married to Jeff Everson, who is an elite bodybuilder.

Many fitness magazines featured the pair of them.

Despite their divorce in 1996, the pair maintained a cordial relationship.

Conclusion

Cory Everson's bodybuilding career was brief yet impressive. On the men's side, she can be compared to Dorian Yates, as both have never lost an Olympia crown. The degree of ability she has shown elevated her to one of the greatest of all time. Then, when she saw the sport was moving in a direction she disliked, she chose to exit fast.

Cory was one of the few female bodybuilders to achieve success outside of competition after leaving the sport. Even though she has mainly abandoned the sport in her latter years, she is still widely recognized and admired in the community.

It is vital to examine the career of Cory Everson now that the Ms. Olympia event is set to return in 2020. She is an excellent example of how to gracefully exit a sporting career. She is unquestionably the finest at what she does and an inspiration to everyone wishing to follow in her footsteps.
